Discovering Landcare Forum 2008
Over 500 students, teachers and community members from across southern Queensland converged on Goondiwindi on the 19 and 20 August for the fourth annual Discovering Landcare Forum. 2008's event was themed "Science to the Rescue", and promoted the importance of managing our natural resources sustainably and the role of science to help achieve this.
Activities
Students were involved in an array of exciting, hands-on activities based around the themes of science and sustainability. Activity topics included:
-
Biodiversity and native animals - Weeds and Pests
- Water quality
- Water use efficiency
- Indigenous science
- Entomology
- Catchment issues
- Renewable energy
High school students participated in a property planning field day at a local property outside Goondiwindi, where they carried out a range of activities related to real-life property management. Primary students conducted a variety of plant identification and biodiversity surveying activities at the Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens.
A community dinner and family science show was held on the Tuesday evening, where community members heard presentations from inspiring speakers, including Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley, AO, Governor of Queensland, and saw the exciting side of science with Dr Joel Gilmore from the University of Queensland Physics Troupe.
